Composer & Arranger

For many years Howard has composed and arranged, partly initiated as a result of his involvement with Salvation Army bands and choral groups.  A number of song arrangements were written for major Festival events at the Royal Albert Hall, including original works such as ‘When he cometh’ (1989) and ‘Psalm of Thanks’ (1992). Brass band marches, song arrangements and other original works were also written as part of his remit during his service as the SA National Bandmaster. Other original works also followed, such as ‘Elegiac Variations’, ‘The Rising of the Son’ and his ‘Cornet Trio – Starlights’. A number of brass and choral works have been published by SP&S Ltd and other more recent music has been published by Studio Music and R Smith & Co.

More recently he has written for, and accepted commissions from leading brass soloists, such as Steven Mead - Euphonium (‘When he Cometh’, 2005 and ‘Pastorale – My Joy and Crown’, 2019), David Childs - Euphonium (Precious Thoughts, 2004), and Brett Baker – Trombone (Iona Boat Song, 2006). Other recent works include song arrangements of ‘Ride on in Majesty’ and the ‘Easter Hymn’ as recorded by Boscombe Band on their CD ‘An Easter Tale’, as well as ‘Lux Descendit’, composed for Boscombe Band and their Annual Christmas concert at Christchurch Priory. Other commissions include the work ‘To Freedom’ written for a former Amsterdam Staff Band member and premiered by the ASB in  Arnhem, The Netherlands, which was the the scene and inspiration for the piece.

Howard has also arranged his brass band piece ‘Chassidic Dance’ for Wind Band, and is currently working on other commissions. Some of his compositons and arrangements are to be made available through this website. Please see the Merchandise section. Please use the contact section
